Taggiasca Olives don’t change!

The legal battle involving the “Cultivar Taggiasca”, a typical cultivar from the Liguria region (“Taggiasca” in fact comes from Taggia, a small medieval town in the province of Imperia), considered one of the most prized in the world, the subject of a long dispute between the Taggiasca Dop Committee and the Ministry of Agricultural Policies, has recently ended.

The crux of the matter is that for years the promoters of the Taggiasca PDO have been asking for the Taggiasca olive to become “PDO”, for a question of greater opportunities and competition in foreign markets but, to do this, it is necessary to change the name of the cultivar, because:

«a name may not be registered as a protected designation of origin or geographical indication if it conflicts with the name of a plant variety»;

quindi, l’oliva “Taggiasca” non può essere Dop perché Taggiasca è anche il nome della cultivar, da qui l’espediente del cambio titolo.

The Lazio Regional Administrative Court has ruled unequivocally on the failure to replace the name in the National Register of Fruit Varieties and, therefore, on the impossibility of applying the DOP mark to the Taggiasca olive, also because the cultivar is now present in many areas of Italy and it would not be correct to limit it to a Protected Designation of Origin.
